THATCHING WORKSHOP
Traditional Techniques and Experimental Earth Dome Thatching
September 30th - October 3rd 2020
Place: Paterno Calabro, Calabria (Italy)
Cost: 420 euros / 500 euros
This four days workshop will focus on thatching techniques that use straw, reed and broom.
The workshop will be held by Alan Jones, Master Thatcher from Wales. (http://www.thatchingwales.co.uk/)
Students will benefit from Alan’s forty years of experience in traditional and sustainable thatching which spans historic and experimental archeology as well as contemporary thatching and advice for self builds.
The workshop will be held in English and Italian and it will be composed of two parts.
First part:
The course will start with an introduction to the different thatching techniques supported by photographic materials. Then methods of fixing thatch in place will be discussed and demostrated. The workshop attendees will practice thatching with straw and reed over a small test roof placed on the ground.
Second part:
The workshop attendees will actively take part in the construction of a thatch roof made of broom over a SuperAdobe earth dome. They will take part in the broom harvesting on the field, in the manipulation and in the fixing of the material over the dome. The whole process will have an experimental nature for both the material used and for the kind of structure which will be thatched. In addition to the expert lead of Alan Jones this part of the workshop will be held also by Davide Frasca, earthdome builder, trainer of the Superadobe technique and representative in Italy of the California Institute of Earth Architecture. The earth dome is built with a technique called SuperAdobe, the workshop attendees will be introduced to the construction principles of such a structure.
The combination of a thatch roof with plants found on the land and a SuperAdobe earth dome structure aims to test a prototype of sustainable construction adaptable also to self-building, emergency shelter unit and application in contexts where lack of resources generate housing problems.
There is the possibility for the workshop attendees to partecipate also to the dome construction which will take place a week before this thatching course. For more information please contact us.
