CAL-EARTH WORKSHOP
SUPERADOBE EARTH DOME WORKSHOP
April 21st - April 28th / 2019

The Cal-Earth Institute (Californian Institute of Earth Architecture) in collaboration with Vide Terra organizes a SuperAdobe workshop in Italy. This 8 days intensive course teaches how to apply the SuperAdobe/earthbag technique for a dome construction.
The workshoppers will receive an official certificate of completion from the Cal-Earth Institute.
During the workshop it will be built a 2,5m (internal diameter) earth dome with a door opening and a window. The purpose of the course is to give the theoretical and practical tools useful to design and build a small earth structure or living space.
The workshop will be divided into a theoretical and a practical part.
Theory:
- Earth architecture and the importance of building with earth
- The SuperAdobe technique
- The principle of the arch and of the dome
- Designing a dome
- Practical techniques to analyse earth composition
- Introduction to waterproofing
- Designing more complex structures and living spaces based on the Eco-Dome concept.
Practice:
- Hands on construction of a complete 2,5m earth dome (foundation and structure)
- Creation of openings for doors, windows and ventilation
- Introduction to plastering
Tuition Costs:
560€ - if you book your place before 2 March 2019
640€ - if you book your place after 2 March 2019
The places are limited. The deadline for the registration is 6 April 2019
The course will be held in English and Italian.
Food and accommodation:
For 15€ per day it will be provided a shared room with multiple beds (3-4 beds per room) and breakfast included. Each room has its own bathroom. With additional 20€ per day 2 meals (lunch and dinner) will be provided, each meal costs 10 euros. The students are free to provide themselves with a different accommodation and meal solution. The accomodation provided is equipped with a fully functioning shared kitchen, a dining room and a living room. The students are free to use the kitchen provided to cook their own meals if they wish.

Mark Harmon - Experienced Superadobe builder, previous technical director of the Cal-Earth Institute.
